It presents the life of the Spartan warrior during peace and war, from his training to his battlefield experiences during the Greek and Persian and Peloponnesian wars. It provides background information explaining their unique society that forbad the pure-bred men of Sparta from taking on manual labor. As such it enabled them to concentrate all their energies on warfare. A Chronology is included from 776 BC to 331 BC. The book covers the training and education of young and older boys; the Spartan warrior’s appearance and dress; his equipment including shields, emblems, spears, swords, helmets, the cuirass and greaves; their military service and army organization.

The book contains a number of photographs and some excellent color artwork. Spartan Warrior is a great reference book for the historian, wargamer, or figure painter. Each of these hobbyists can glean mu useful information from these pages.
