Cockleshell Heroes: Operation Frankton,
December 11, 1942.

CH components

Cockleshell Heroes is a solitaire play game portraying Operation Frankton. Operation Frankton was a commando raid on ships based in the German occupied French port of Bordeaux during the Second World War. The raid was carried out by a small unit of the Royal Marines know as the “Royal Marines Boom Patrol Detachment” who were part of a combined operations transported by the submarine, HMS Tuna.

The plan was for six canoes, nicknamed “Cockleshells”, to be taken to the area of the Gironde estuary by HMS Tuna. Twelve men would then paddle during the night to Bordeaux harbor. On arrival they would attack the docked cargo ships by attaching limpet mines to the ships’ hulls. The Royal Marines would then escape overland through occupied France to neutral Spain. Men from Number One Section of the Royal Marines were selected for the raid, including the commanding officer, Herbert “Blondie” Hasler. One cockleshell was badly damaged while being deployed from the submarine, and its crew therefore not able to take part in the mission. Only two of the ten other cockleshell crews who paddled away from HMS Tuna in the night survived the raid; Hasler and his companion, Bill Sparks. Of the other eight, six were executed by the Germans as spies in accordance with Hitler’s orders regarding any captured commandoes, and two others died from hypothermia.

Each copy of Cockleshell Heroes is composed of the following:

  • Four 11 by 17 inch map sheets.
  • 155 single-sided, un-mounted counters and patrol boat view overlay.
  • One sheet with Cockleshell crew displays and search overlay.
  • 7 pages of rules.

Players will also need a six-sided dice (D6) and an opaque container (small bag, mug, envelope or anything similar) to play the game. Cockleshell Heroes is designed by Amos Burke, developed by Paul Rohrbaugh, and features graphics by Tim Allen. The game is designed for solitaire play, but there are variant rules for two players. Cockleshell Heroes sells for $20.95 plus shipping. Mounted counters can be had for an additional $8.00. A Brilliant Little Affair: The Battle of Chrysler’s Farm,
November 11, 1813
.

The US capture of Canada was assumed in Washington, DC “to be a mere matter of marching”. However, the fight for the British colony was severe and prolonged. The US mounted a double-pronged offensive from New York to take Canadian capital city of Montreal in the fall of 1813 planned by US Secretary of War, John Armstrong, Jr.. However, the two US forces were commanded by Generals James Wilkenson, who had a particularly dubious and corrupt history, and Major General Wade Hampton, who loathed and despised Wilkenson.  With little to no cooperation between the US forces, their British and Canadian opponents were able to deal with each US force separately. On October 26th Hampton’s force was defeated at the battle of Chateauguay. British and Canadian forces under the command of Lt. Colonel Joseph Wanton Morrison screened Wilkenson’s force soon after they left Sackett’s harbor on October 7th, falling back and reporting upon the US army as it crossed into Canada on November 7th opposite Ogdensburg. All the while more British, Canadian and First Nation troops arrived to bolster Morrison’s force. On November 11th the combined British, Canadian and First Nation force, despite being outnumbered by almost two-to-one by the Americans, deployed for battle at a large open field crossed by several creeks along the St. Lawrence River where they could be supported by several British gunboats. The fight for Montreal would occur here, near Chrysler’s farm.

Each copy of A Brilliant Little Affair is composed of the following:

  • One 11 by 17 inch map with Turn Record Track.
  • 100 double-sided counters.
  • 8 pages of rules.

Units represent 80 to 100 (regular and militia infantry) or 35 to 50 (First Nation and Dragoon) men. Artillery units represent 1 cannon. Each turn represents 45 minutes of time and a hex is approximately 100 yards across. A Brilliant Little Affair is designed by Paul Rohrbaugh and features graphics by Ilya Kudriashov. The game sells for $15.95 plus shipping. Mounted counters can be had for an additional $8.00. You can access the game’s web page, and order form, from here: https://www.hfdgames.com/cfarm.html

Red Coats, Grey Jackets: The Battle of Chippawa,
July 5, 1814
.

red coats grey jackets components

The US capture of Canada was assumed in Washington, DC “to be a mere matter of marching”. However, the fight for the British colony was severe and prolonged, especially in Ontario’s Niagara peninsula. By the summer of 1814 fighting had raged throughout the region, with natives on both sides of the border fighting in the armies of both the US and those of Great Britain and Canada, and the cities of York (modern day Toronto) and Buffalo were in ruins. In many ways this was neighbor vs. neighbor with elements of a civil war casting the entire region into near chaos maintained by military occupation.

That summer both sides arrayed their largest armies fielded to date in the war. With the US victory on Lake Erie and the recapture of Detroit to the west, the focus of the war was now turned once again to the Niagara peninsula as the war’s theater of decision. Can you do as well, or better, than your historical counterparts? Learn and enjoy!

Each copy of Red Coats, Grey Jackets is composed of the following:

  • One 11 by 17 inch map with Turn Record Track.
  • 90 double-sided counters.
  • 8 pages of rules.

Each hex is approximately 50 yards across, a regular or militia infantry unit is 250-350 men, First Nation and Dragoon units are 80 to 100 men, and artillery units represent 2 or 3 guns. A turn represents one hour of time. Red Coats, Grey Jackets is designed by Paul Rohrbaugh and features graphics by Ilya Kudriashov. The game sells for $15.95 plus shipping. Mounted counters can be had for an additional $8.00. You can access the game’s web page, and order form, from here: https://www.hfdgames.com/chippewa.html
