Fleurus components

Ill Met in Flanders: The Battle of Fleurus, August 29, 1622 (Battles of the Thirty Years War Series).

The battle of Fleurus was fought during the so-called Bohemian phase of the Thirty Years War, but the battle occurred in the Flanders, fought between a Catholic Spanish army under the command of Gonzalo de Cordoba and a Protestant Protestant army led by mercenary leaders Mansfeld and Christian of Brunswick. The battle of Fleurus was initiated by a call from the Protestant Dutch to relieve the city of Breda, then under siege by another Spanish army under the command of Ambrogio Spinola. The aim of the Protestant troops was to cut off the retreat and trap the Spaniards, not just to end the siege.

The Protestant army encountered their opponents near Fleurus, and a furious battle ensued, where the better led (even if weaker) Spanish army was able to crush their Protestant enemy and provide a means of retreat for Spinola’s force.

Each copy of Ill Met in Flanders is composed of the following:

  • Two 11 by 17 inch map
  • One sheet of 140 single-sided, un-mounted counters
  • One Players Aid Sheet
  • 5 pages of rules

Players will also need one six-sided die (D6) and an opaque container (mug, envelope or anything similar) to play the game. Each combat unit represents from 300 to 1000 soldiers, and it is rated, from left to right, for combat factor, morale factor and movement factor. Each infantry strength point is around 150 men, each cavalry strength point around 60 men. Each leader is rated for Command (indicating how many activation chits that leader has) and Movement. Each hex is about 100 meters. Each turn represents a half hour of time.

Ill Met in Flanders is designed by veteran game designer, Roberto Chiavini and features graphics by Bruce Yearian. Ill Met in Flanders sells for $17.95 plus shipping. Mounted counters can be had for an additional $8.00. You can access the game’s web page, and the order form, from here: https://www.hfdgames.com/fleurus.html

A Sea of Fog and Fire: The Battle of Heligoland Bight, August 28, 1914. A Sea of Fog and Fire

is an introductory level wargame simulation on the first surface naval action between the Royal Navy and that of Imperial Germany in WWI. The game design is meant to be simple and highly playable, yet one that portrays the historical challenges facing the combatants.

Alarmed by German submarine and mine attacks, the British Admiralty planned a raid to catch German ships as they sortied from their anchorage at Heligoland Bight. A force of British Light Cruisers and Destroyers, supported by Armored and Battle Cruisers would cut off enemy ships patrolling outside of the anchorage, and then intercept and destroy any that came to their rescue/support. However, thick fog and confusion amongst the various British contingents led to a confused, running battle in which luck and happenstance played as much a part in the battle’s outcome as surprise and skill. Will you do as better, or worse, than your historical counterpart?

Each copy of A Sea of Fog and Fire is composed of the following:

  • One sheet of 128 double-sided counters.
  • Two 11 by 17 inch maps.
  • One players’ aid sheet.
  • Eight pages of rules.

Players will also need one ten-sided (D10) and one six-sided (D6) dice. A Sea of Fog and Fire is designed by Paul Rohrbaugh and features graphics by Bruce Yearian. The game sells for $17.95 plus shipping. Mounted counters can be had for an additional $8.00. You can access the game’s web page, and the order form, from here: https://www.hfdgames.com/fire.html

A Scourge of Stone and Spirit: The Siege of Harfleur, 1415.

“Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more?”—Cry God for King Harry, England and St. George” speech from Shakespeare’s Henry V, Act III, 1598.

The siege of Harfleur marked the beginning of King Henry V of England’s invasion of France. The bitter and protracted siege nearly ended King Hal’s ambitions, and the French garrison’s prolonged resistance allowed the French King to mobilize a huge army. The two forces would meet at Agincourt in a decisive battle that shaped the future destinies of both countries.

Players use a standard deck of playing cards and six-sided die to conduct the siege. Actions include bombardments, sallies and counter-mining by the French garrison, mining and assault actions for the British. Both sides must make the most of their activations to bring about an end to the siege, while also not running up a butcher’s bill in the process. The game is very interactive, true to the history, plays in an hour of less and is easily learned and taught.

Each copy of A Scourge of Stone and Spirit is composed of the following:

One 8.5 by 11 inch area map with game tracks
One sheet of 21 double-sided, un-mounted counters

Three pages of rules

Players will also need a standard deck of playing cards (a custom card set is available from the publisher) and a six-sided die to play the game. The game is designed by Paul Rohrbaugh and features graphics by Tim Allen. A Scourge of Stone and Spirit sells for $9.95 plus shipping. Mounted counters can be had for an additional $8.00. You can also get the game for free with any purchase of 4 games.

A custom card set for the game is also available. The A Scourge of Stone and Spirit card set replaces the standard deck of playing cards called for in the rules, features graphics by Tim Allen, and has rules reminders on pertinent cards. The A Scourge of Stone and Spirit custom card set is $10.00 or can be had for free with any purchase of 4 games.
